A successful health and lifestyle change begins with a positive attitude.

How many times during your lifetime do you suppose that you have talked yourself out of doing something good for your health?

I am sure if you are like me, then it is way more times than you care to admit. In my teens,I was slated to become an Olympic 100 meter sprint runner. Years later, severe joint pain and genetics would play a part in ending that dream.

By the time I had my first child, I was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day and had gained well over 50 pounds and sadly, I was not even twenty five years old. It was a complete negative transformation and something that I am not really that proud of. During this negative period in my life,I would simply make excuses for why I was not taking care of myself.  My negative attitude towards my life was affecting both my mental and physical health and well being.

It is amazing how looking into the eyes and heart of a child can totally change your life and how you think about it. One day, my daughter came to my room and said,  “Mommy, I do not want you to die like Nanny because I love you.”  My mother in law had recently died from lung cancer caused by years of excessive smoking.

I looked into the face of my little girl and saw fear. Not because she was afraid someone would hurt her, but because she thought if I kept smoking, I would die. I realized, she was right. I could not bare to put her through the pain of losing someone else she loved. I admired her for taking the step to confront  me, it probably was not easy for her.

That one little statement gave me back my life and my health.  That was the day I smoked my last cigarette. I had tried so many times to quit prior to that day. I cannot remember exactly how many times, but I always failed miserably.  In fact, I never believed that I would ever quit and I just accepted that fact. I reasoned that the addiction was  greater than my will.

What I know now, that I did not know then, was that it was not the addiction, but my negative attitude towards the addition that was stopping me from succeeding. It was just easier to fail, than to have to try.

My daughter gave me the motivation that I needed to improve my health.

I was no longer quitting for me, I was now doing it for an even better reason – to be around long enough to watch out for her.

I began to look at all my problems from a different perspective and started to become amazed at how a small lifestyle change and a positive attitude was making such an impact on my life. It gave me a sense of freedom that I cannot entirely explain.  It was like this huge burden had been lifted from me.

Negativity feels like a huge burden that takes over your life and destroys you bit by bit, while a positive attitude is freeing and makes you feel alive and refreshed.

Once I quit smoking, I began to feel more energetic and I began to take short walks with the dog. I had not taken walks in years. Little by little, this positive attitude was encouraging me to try new things, get active and I even started to care about my life and health. Needless to say, I now look and feel as healthy as when I was a young upcoming Olympian. I set time aside each and every night to listen to a meditation video and I get regular spa treatments to pamper myself.

If you want to change your life and make an attempt at changing your health, then start with trying to have a more positive attitude.

Here are some tips and tricks to change your negative thinking into more positive thoughts.  Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it.

  • Stop saying ” I can’t do it.”
  • Start saying ” I can.”
  • Stop making excuses.
  • Start  making reasons.
  • Stop using these negative behaviors;  blaming, expecting and judging.
  • Start using these positive behaviors;  understanding, acceptance and giving.
  • Stop surrounding your life with negative things and negative people.
  • Start filling your life with positive things and positive people.

Using these simple lifestyle tips along with rewarding yourself with monthly or weekly trips to a spa or fitness centre will have a huge impact on your over well being. You will leave feeling revived, rejuvenated and relaxed.

When you start to take care of yourself, you see more clearly and you become more positive. When you are a positive person, positive things begin to happen.

Positive people tend to be happier, have better health and are generally more successful.
